Sara Parkin

Founder and Trustee

Along with Jonathon Porritt and Paul Ekins, Sara is a founder of Forum for the Future for which she designed the Forum Masters in Leadership for Sustainable ​Development.

She taught the Masters for 20 years until 2016 when the University of Surrey University took it over, Forum deciding to develop a more flexible modular, international learning programme.  Together, the 250 graduates count as one of Forum for the Future’s greatest contribution to a sustainable future.   Sara’s 2010 book, based on the Forum Masters, The Positive Deviant: Sustainability Leadership in a Perverse World  has become a set book on courses around the world.

After starting working life in nursing, Sara moved into Green Politics playing various leadership roles in the UK and internationally before focussing on sustainability literate’ leadership.  Over the years this has led to various collaborative projects with engineers, universities and professions. Amongst other things, Sara currently advises the National Union of Students and sits on the Boards of the Higher Education Academy and the Carnegie Foundation for the Universities of Scotland.   

From 2016 Sara will be bringing her interest in integrating sustainability into the curricula of universities and colleges through The Sustainability Literacy Project.  More about this and a fuller biography may be found on
